A Systematic Approach to Reviewing Hospital Inpatient Mortality

Thorough and accurate hospital mortality risk assessment is crucial for understanding the intersection of population health and healthcare delivery. Presenters at this session will discuss that while the overall mortality index at their institution reflected that fewer patients expired in-house than expected, they appeared to fare poorly when compared to colleagues in the Vizient, Inc., Academic Medical Center (AMC) cohort.

In 2016, they ranked 94th in mortality out of 96 centers. Consequently, they sought to improve their mortality ranking by more accurately depicting expected mortality. Presenters will discuss how they developed a CDI process that focused on provider education, cc/mcc capture, documentation of secondary diagnoses, and CDI-coding interaction.

Learner Outcomes

After completing this session, participants will be able to:

• Identify risk variables and form clear and appropriate queries to physicians explaining the importance of their participation in the mortality process.
• Conduct secondary level reviews that target mortality index.
• Have more information about appropriate queries to physicians that target the risk variables and explain the importance of their participation in the process.
