Saving Time for Patient Care by Optimizing Physician Note Templates

Presenters at this session will discuss the notes templates that were optimized in October 2015 after several meetings with EMR personnel. The first optimization step was to identify all free text elements documented elsewhere in the medical records (e.g. delivery information and lab result). The elements were then replaced with dynamic “SmartLinks” that automatically populate portions of the note. The second step was to identify the remaining free text elements that could be replaced with “SmartLists.” The new note templates were given new SmartLinks to increase ease of use and accessibility.

Attend this session to learn how a pediatrics team that cares for infants in a mother-baby unit effectively used these notes templates.

Learner Outcomes

Attendees of this session will learn:

• How optimizing physicians’ notes templates in EMRs in the mother-baby unit at the University of Florida in Jacksonville resulted in a significant time saving of 2.6 hours per day.
• How these templates minimized the manual entry of medical information by dynamically pulling medical data directly from the data source, which eliminated human error and improved patient safety.
• How these templates also resulted in improving the satisfaction of residents, medical students and nurse practitioners and decreased physician burnout remarkably as stated by the staff in surveys, reviews, emails, and meetings.
