Evidence-based HIM Operations Management

The presentation will begin with an introduction to a previously published case study used for HIM operations management. The methods used for the case study, including ITB approval and the questions asked for the interviews and focus groups will be reviewed. The major themes that emerged from the case study will be discussed.

For example, presenters will discuss that setting and achieving goals resulted in a sense of pride for the employees, with many creating their own personal dashboards. How the data are gathered and collated into a system-wide dashboard and separate organizational dashboards will be described. Challenges and issues encountered when using the dashboards, such as inaccurate automated data collection will be explained.

The presentation will conclude with a discussion of the need to modify historical HIM benchmarks (such as the 30 days for release of information), as well as the need for more HIM operations management benchmarks within the healthcare industry.

Presenters will provide recommendations for those who want to begin building a dashboard.

Learner Outcomes
