The acceleration of information technology and interoperability will continue to be a catalyst for greater access, use, and disclosure of health information. Protecting information each step of the way is vital as we connect patients to care in ways that extend far beyond traditional healthcare boundaries. Health information professionals are the ideal experts for meeting both the challenges and opportunities present in privacy and information security.

In the face of unprecedented challenges, AHIMA20 aims to equip health information professionals with the necessary resources to adapt to new realities, modernize standards and regulations, and empower them to provide evidence-based expertise to professionals in every domain of the healthcare ecosystem.

As AHIMA prepares to bring its members an annual conference virtual event like never before, we’re taking you behind the scenes to learn how staff and volunteers are working to create this unique and interactive show. You’ll also learn helpful navigation tips and uncover the “hidden gems” behind AHIMA20!

In this behind the scenes spotlight, we’re talking to Robyn Stambaugh, MS, RHIA, practice director for professional development and education at AHIMA.

Question: What is your role at AHIMA and AHIMA20?

Robyn Stambaugh: I am practice director of professional development and education at AHIMA. For the conference, I have oversight of Information Protection: Privacy and Security track for AHIMA20.

Q: What have been some of the challenges of converting a massive in-person conference into a virtual event?

Stambaugh: Our AHIMA20 conference planning team has navigated well through the move to a virtual conference. We turned challenges into opportunities.

Perhaps the biggest challenges were captured in these two questions: How do we do take the expectations of the face to face experience and deliver content in a way that is engaging and insightful? And, then how do we provide the interactive aspect that everyone appreciates so much when we are onsite together?

A virtual experience takes many of the face-to-face venue planning challenges and emphasizes things that are unique to virtual. For instance, technology is used in a different way to connect the speakers to their audience and necessitates more training in advance for our speakers.

“The Information Protection track is loaded with expert speakers addressing a variety of privacy and security topics. Attendees are going to hear them speak to specific topics like information blocking, which Dr. Michael Stearns, MD, CPC, CRC, CFPC, will detail in his presentation, An Overview of Information Blocking Rules.

And there is a variety of sessions that focus on the protection of health information privacy and security in a dynamic and ever-changing world.”
